"The Stories of Energy" Video Series

Highlights
“The Stories of Energy” Video Series consists of 16 chapters which, according to different types of energies, are divided into five sections: The Introduction of Energy, Non-renewable Energy, Electricity, Renewable Energy and New Energy. This video series is produced by the “Green Space” Program of China Central Television. The production aim of the video series is to promote energy efficiency and conservation, and to enhance the energy knowledge of the Macao citizens.

Part One: An introduction to the World of Energy
Energy has become a crucial factor in building a national economy and is indispensable in everyday life. Therefore, only by using energy sources efficiently, experimenting with new energy sources, especially renewable ones, can we maintain the sustainable development of mankind.

Part Two: Non-renewable Energy Sources
The fact that oil, coal and natural gas are all non-renewable resources means that the reserves may be depleted some day. In that sense, they cannot provide reliable sources of energy by their own.

Part Three: Coal – Fuel from under the ground
Coal was first used as fuel in the First Industrial Revolution and then for electricity generation. A wide range of chemical products can be extracted from coal, it is no wonder that people call it “black gold”.

Part Four: King of all Energy Sources– Crude oil
Oil superseded coal in many areas after the Second Industrial Revolution. And many believe the widely use of oil hastened the dawn of the electric era. Currently, crude oil accounts for one half of the world’s total energy consumption.

Part Five: Natural Gas - An Ever-burning Torch
Without refining, natural gas can be used directly as fuel and has a calorific value five times higher than fine coal. Being Cheaper, cleaner, and easier to store, natural gas has increasingly become an important source of energy both for industry and everyday life.

Part Six: Electricity – Energy That Brings Brightness
The electricity is not directly derived from nature. Instead, it’s generated from other energy sources including fossil fuels, water and wind power, or solar and nuclear energy.

Part Seven: From Fire to Electricity
Since the construction and operation of a thermal power station is less time-consuming and more cost-efficient than the others, thermal power is the main source of electricity generation which accounts for ninety-five percent of the world’s total supply.

Part Eight: Power of Nature – Hydropower
Hydropower, crude oil, coal and natural gas are four pillar energy sources in which only , but water is considered a clean, pollution-free energy.

Part Nine: Invisible Energy – Nuclear Power
One kilogram of nuclear fuel can generate as much energy as 2.7 million kilograms of coal. Even in developed countries, this cheap energy only costs 3 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Part Ten: Invisible Charm – Natural Gas
Natural gas is a hydrocarbon chemical consisting of high purity methane. It hardly produces sulphur, less carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxides than those by coal and oil when it is burning. So, natural gas is prized around the world.

Part Eleven: The Power Network
Today, cables between towers are giving way to the underground. In Macao, a total of 1,446 kilometers of underground cables have been laid.

Part Twelve: Renewable Energy
Wind, rivers and oceans are renewable resources which exist around the world. Renewable energy has a bright future that could be considered as the only protential power source to mankind, when we are undergoing a global energy crisis.

Part Thirteen: Shining Energy – Solar Energy
As estimated by scientists, solar energy is virtually inexhaustible because the Sun can burn for as long as 6 billion years. Furthermore the collection process for gathering solar power produces no pollution at all.

Part Fourteen: Fleeting Energy – Wind Power
Wind is most commonly used to generate electricity. It can propel turbines, and with the help of generators, the spinning turbines produce electricity. At the end of 19th century, the world’s first wind power plant Denmark was established. But wind power has been growing slowly since then. The development of wind power plants has also stalled because of the cost, which is two or three times as expensive as hydropower plants.

Part Fifteen: Special Renewable Resources
Nature is generous. It provides us with many renewable resources such as wind, solar, hydropower, oceans, biomass and the geothermal power.

Part Sixteen: Discovering New Energy
We are entering an era of hydrogen. And we are still looking for other new energy sources, which will further strengthen the sustainable development of our society.
