What is Energy?

Energy is…

Energy is the driving force for the human beings. There are many forms which may be natural resources and their derivatives as well as can be transformed to mechanical, electrical, thermal and chemical energies under specific conditions.

Energy is indispensable in our daily life. It is also vital to social and economic development, and plays an important role in uplifting our standard of living.

The various form of energy can be divided into two categories. They are “primary energy” and “secondary energy”.

“Primary Energy” and “Secondary Energy”

Primary energy, also known as natural energy, can readily be found and used. They are: Coal, crude oil, natural gas, hydropower, solar, wind, biomass, ocean and geothermal power etc. Besides, they can also be classified into renewable and non-renewable energy. Renewable energy is the one which is able to recover and does not deplete through transformation and consumption. For example: solar, wind, biomass, ocean and geothermal power. Non-renewable energy includes fossil fuels and nuclear fuel. They are stored in animals and plants sunk underground hundreds of millions ago. It is non-recoverable and will be exhausted through human consumption.

Secondary energy is made up of energy sources that are in turn transformed from primary energy. They are electricity, gasoline, diesel, tar, coal, steam and hydrogen energy etc.

Relationship between energy and human beings

Energy plays an important role in human civilization. If it is absent, lighting, air-conditioners, office equipments and machines cannot be operated, either economic activities could be interrupted. Similarly, services provided in the service sector will be halted without it. Transportation also depends on it for sources of impetus. Energy is also the source of power for all aspects of living and social activities, it is indispensable in our daily life.
